We run both the White Liner shared bus and private charters between New Chitose Airport and Niseko. So we can tell you honestly which one fits your group, and what each will cost.
Two adults and two children pay ¥38,400 round trip on the White Liner with the current web discount, or ¥48,000 at the standard fare. A private van on the same route starts at about ¥96,000 round trip. Four or five adults pay about 47% and 58% of the van price on the bus (¥44,800 and ¥56,000 round trip with the discount). We operate both services, so this is not a pitch for one over the other — unless you arrive after the last bus, stay outside Hirafu, or need door-to-door service for a specific reason, the bus is the better value for a group of this size.
Round-trip fares, New Chitose Airport ⇆ Hirafu Welcome Center. One way is exactly half. Bus fares are shown with the current web-booking discount (it changes month by month) and at the standard fare.
We would rather you book the option that actually suits you. A private charter is worth the extra cost when one of these applies:
The last White Liner leaves the airport at 15:45 (check-in closes at 15:25), so flights that land after 15:00 cannot make it — and from an international flight you need at least 90 minutes after landing. A private charter can take you to Niseko the same day instead. If your flight lands very late in the evening, a same-day transfer may be difficult to arrange; send us your flight number and we will confirm what is possible.
The bus has one stop, at the Hirafu Welcome Center. For Niseko Village, Annupuri or Hanazono, the direct options are a private charter, the resort’s own shuttle, the local bus, or a taxi.
Most Hirafu hotels are 1 to 15 minutes on foot from the stop, on snow-covered streets. For elderly travellers or very young children, door-to-door can be worth it.
A charter can stop on the way, for example at a supermarket in Kutchan or a sightseeing spot. Tell us about any stops when you ask for a quote: charters are priced by distance and time, so the stops are built into the quote. A quick stop at a shop on the usual route normally adds only the waiting time. The bus is direct, with one rest stop at Bifue Pass and no hotel stops.
The bus takes one ski or snowboard bag plus one other bag per person in the luggage bay; a handbag or small backpack you keep with you does not count. If your group travels with more than that, a charter is worth considering.
At that size a van no longer fits everyone with their ski bags, and a minibus is usually the easier choice.
Every seat is booked in advance, so there is no queue at the airport. The morning departures from Hirafu are usually the busiest, so book early if your group wants to travel together. A minimum of 6 passengers is required for a departure to run; we confirm operation 7 days before. Depending on the number of passengers, the vehicle may be a van, a minibus or a mid-size coach.
Each passenger may bring one set of ski or snowboard equipment and one other piece of luggage. The one-piece limit applies even if you are not carrying skis. Personal items you keep with you on board, such as a handbag or a small backpack, do not count toward this. If your group has more than that, send the extra bags ahead by courier, or consider a charter.
Children aged 3 to 12 pay the child fare and have their own seat. Infants who do not occupy a seat travel free of charge. Japanese law does not require child seats on buses, so our buses are not fitted with them. If your family needs a child seat, the private van (a Toyota HiAce) can provide one free of charge.
The Welcome Center sits in the middle of Hirafu. Nine properties are within about 5 minutes on foot — Skye Niseko (1 min), Muwa Niseko (2), Ki Niseko (3), Sansui Niseko (3), Chalet Ivy Hirafu (4), The Maples Niseko (4), HakuVillas (5), Niseko Prince Hotel Hirafutei (5) and Niseko Park Hotel (5) — and another ten, including Chatrium Niseko, The Vale, AYA Niseko and Setsu Niseko, are within 10. See the full walking-distance list. Distances are straight-line estimates; allow extra time with ski bags on snow.
If you miss your bus because of a delay, we will move you to the next departure or the next day for ¥500 per person, as long as seats are available. If no seats are available, the standard cancellation fee applies (50% before departure, 100% after departure or no-show). Bookings can be changed online until noon the day before travel.
The White Liner operates from 12 December to 23 March. Timetables and stop details are on the main bus page.
